Ne’- na : an alternative art program for artists-residency, studio and exhibition space in Chiangmai Thailand since 1998. The program was design for international artists who are interested in visiting Thailand, meeting colleague-artists, working or expanding artistic ideas (project) as well as setting up exhibitions in Thailand.  Ne’-na also cooperate with some major art institutions, art organizations and galleries in Thailand, in producing major exhibitions from artist attending in the Ne’-na program.

At Ne’-na, the artist can both relax and live the Thai way of life or he/she can work in a studio-space. If requested...we can provide, at the artist’s own expenses, skillful assistants at very low cost, to assist the artist in his studio, at art schools, factories or in ordering the production of work in factories, etc.  The artist can also arrange discussions on artistic topics or set up an exhibition (the living room exhibition) for a period of two weeks up to four weeks.  The public and the press will be invited and on-line information will be provided.  The artist can stay and work at Ne’-na from 1 week up to 3 months.

Shukit Panmongkol is an artist from Thailand who lives and works professionally in Sweden since 1980.  He will be the hosts at Ne’-na.  When he is in Thailand, he resides at the accommodation atelier and the exhibition space for the artist in the program.  He will introduce the artist to other Thai artist, art-institutions and some traditional or modern technical devices as required by each individual’s art technique or media.

Background

Ne’-na is a collaborative non-profit program between Swedish and Thai artists.  This program aims at inter-cultural exchange of individual experiences, professional development, international cooperation, exhibitions, etc. During the periods that the exhibition space is unoccupied, local Thai artists will be invited to introduce their work. These will generals a diversity of artists’ activities at the Ne’-na exhibition space.  The program is organized by committees in both countries: The Swedish committee will provide a formal recommendation, an introduction and a selection of Swedish and international artists / participants in the program.  The Thai committee will do a selection of international artists and assist in providing the necessary requirements for the artists/ participants at Ne’-na

Ne’-na can offer a 2 rooms accommodation for 2 young couples (4 persons) with a large studio space to share. Ne’-na is located near Chiangmai University and Art Museum and almost in the heart of city of Chiangmai.

Ne’-na is, as far as we know, the first non state-run organization in Southeast Asia (Thailand & Indochina) that provides artist-residency program in this region.  This program was carefully planned; therefore an initial experimental period was set up for the period 1998-1999.   During this first stage of the program, we aim at collaboration with artists, art-organization and art-institutions in Sweden and EU. The feedback of this experimental period have led to a tight collaboration between artists, art-organizations and art-institution from Thailand, Sweden and EU. Ne’-na will therefore organize further activities in the future. We welcome interested artists and institutions to participate in the program.
